The Best Way to Water Orchids
There is a correct and an incorrect way to water orchids and so you need to understand this so that you may care for them properly. In order to thrive, your orchids will require very specific growing conditions. Part of offering your orchid the right growing conditions is giving your orchid the right amount of water.
The quantity of water that is necessary for an orchid’s growth is not the same for all the various species of orchids and therefore it is vital that you understand the requirements of your specific plant. In this regard it is beneficial that you know about orchids in general and where they come from
Orchid plants are typically found in tropical climates. The locations in which numerous orchid plants are found get an incredible amount of rainfall. In addition, an orchid’s natural environment may be extremely humid. In fact, the ideal humidity level for most orchid plants is 80%. Of course, humans do not usually thrive in 80% humidity so you may have to find another way to keep the humidity high enough for your orchids.
It is simple to maintain a proper humidity level for your orchids by supplying them with a steady source of water. Small rocks or pebbles and a deep dish will provide the appropriate tools to keep your orchids happy. The saucer is then lined with the pebbles. Adding water to the pebbles creates evaporation, then place the pot with the orchids on top of the rocks. You should make sure that the water never touches the actual orchid pot. This arrangement will have the effect of creating the high-humidity environment which your orchid plant requires to prosper.
Though orchids like moisture, it is important not to over-water them. Most people assume that the plant needs water if the soil in the pot appears to be dry. This is not true especially when it comes to orchids. The potting bark still holds moisture within the material even when the outside layers appears to be dry.
The rule of thumb is to water orchids plants once a week or once every other week, sparingly. When growing orchids in your home, you should let the potting bark dry out completely before watering them again. There are species of orchids that, in their natural environment, grow on tree branches and tree trunks. In such a habitat, it is quite usual for the roots to become completely dry before they receive any additional water.
Proper water temperature is also important to water orchids. Water that is too cold or hot can cause damage to the cells in the roots. Keep your water temperature lukewarm for best results. The water you use should feel comfortable to the touch, not to cold, not to hot.
Following a proper schedule of watering and fertilization for your orchids is the best way of ensuring that you will appreciate their alluring beauty for a long time. Following a regimen of correct orchid care, including the proper amount of potting soil, the correct amount of water, the right quantity of sunlight and occasional fertilization, will cause your plant to flourish in your home.
Orchids are exotic, beautiful plants; but they can also be temperamental. However, with a knowledge of proper orchid care you will find that it is not exceedingly difficult to cultivate and enjoy the exotic beauty of these plants. Just keep in mind the correct way to water orchids.
