Yearly Conundrum: Mothers Day Gifts
Once a year we pay official tribute to our moms. We all know that they deserve more than that, and we all treasure and cherish our parents every day of the year. But there is that one day a year where everyone goes out to buy Mother’s Day gifts, and everyone buys the same boring old things.
Flowers and chocolates are the usual tradition. And who would ever say that a homemade supper is something that virtually every mother would appreciate? You can buy material things, but in the end analysis, they are in fact nothing more than things that didn’t require a lot of thought.
It’s possible to walk into any department store or other retailer and know right away what sorts of things are thought to be good presents for moms. They are all out there, shiny and new, waiting for you to fork over your cash for it. However, most people just kind of grab whatever looks good or impressive without thinking twice about it or the person for whom it is intended.
Boys are the worst for this. Sons and husbands both tend to be a little mystified when it comes to shopping for other people. It’s true that they sometimes have what they believe will be the perfect thing in mind, and they are often correct, but all too often they just stand with their mouths open and stare at the shelves until something, anything, happens inside their minds.
Part of this is due to the age difference, at least as far as sons are concerned. There are also problems when males try to think of things that females might enjoy. Men know that women are not quite the same as them, but they also know that they aren’t very different, either. This is why women sometimes get weird presents like dirt bikes or air rifles.
If you are trying to come up with something nice, appropriate, and unique for you mom this year, you are already making more of an effort than some people are. You know the woman better than most people do, so start by making a list of things she likes. Once you’ve got that list, focus on the more unusual ones. These are the interests which define your mom.
Be prepared for the possibility that you aren’t at all knowledgeable about what interests her. If the things she likes don’t necessarily interest you, or if her interests are unusual, you may not be able to narrow things down. If that’s what’s happening, go somewhere where that sort of thing is retailed and find out if there’s an expert in that particular subject. People just love togo on about their passions, and you are likely to get some real help.
A little time and thought put into Mothers Day gifts this year doesn’t hurt at all. Your mom is probably not all that different from yourself, and there are sime strong preferences she has. Let this guide you.
